Fewer BTC T-shirts, and more cryptos: Amazon would consider developing a digital currency. The « small » are currently ahead of the giants in the field of cryptos payments.
Can’t wait for Jeff Bezos to leave?
According to CoinDesk, Amazon’s Digital and Emerging Payments (DEP) division is working on a new digital currency project to be launched in Mexico.
According to publications on the Amazon Jobs site, DEP wants to hire software development managers and engineers. The first job offer was published in October 2020, but it has recently been updated.
These job offers can relate to many fields; digital money can refer to a large number of digital means of payment.
Amazon already has its own digital currency, the Amazon Coin, the equivalent of the Disney Dollar, which can be used on « in-app items » in the Appstore.
These developments come at a time when Jeff Bezos is preparing for his departure and is about to hand over the reins of the company to the CEO of Amazon Web Services, Andy Jassy, who had launched the Amazon Managed Blockchain service.
Jassy will face the challenge of implementing new payment gateways or new payment methods.
Amazon doesn’t even allow customers to use PayPal yet, let alone pay in Bitcoin.
The little enthusiasts, the hesitant giants, an innovative Tesla
E-commerce giants seem to be turning a blind eye to cryptography – unlike « small » e-commerce sites that see cryptographic payments as an advantage in attracting new customers.
This French luxury wine merchant has even launched an online retail sale of vintage wines, accepting payments in Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), or Bitcoin Cash (BCH).
On February 8, 2021, Tesla acquired $1.5 billion in BTC, and announced that the company could soon accept payments in cryptos for the purchase of its products.
When will cryptos become commonplace as a means of payment? Stablecoins and some altcoins should beat Bitcoin in this field. Even the Dogecoin (DOGE) could beat Bitcoin as a means of payment, thanks to the support of Elon Musk and other celebrities. Should Amazon and the other e-commerce giants really develop their own cryptos or just accept existing ones? Cryptos payment gateways can be integrated with just a few clicks. So what’s the point of embarking on a tech adventure to develop dedicated solutions – which might be less efficient?
